Kia has celebrated a major landmark as the Sportage becomes the latest model to pass the half-million sales mark in the UK. The brand’s most popular car has now clocked up 500,000 registrations since it first arrived on British roads in 1995, underlining its status as one of the country’s best-loved family SUVs.
The 500,000th example – a GT-Line Hybrid finished in Blue Flame – was handed over at Kia’s flagship retailer GWR in Brentford. The achievement comes as the Sportage continues to dominate the UK new car sales charts more than three decades after its UK debut.
Britain’s Favourite Family SUV
Following its 30th anniversary in 2023, when UK sales stood at 384,778, Sportage sales have accelerated strongly. It finished as the UK’s best-selling SUV in both 2024 (47,163 registrations) and 2025 (47,788), while ranking as the second best-selling car overall in each of those years to the Ford Puma an excellent small crossover.
More than 115,000 Sportages have been registered in the past three years alone. In the first five months of 2026 the model recorded 21,274 sales, retaining its position as the nation’s number-one SUV and second most popular car overall.
Paul Philpott, President and CEO of Kia UK, said: “Reaching half a million Sportage sales in the UK is a landmark moment for Kia. The Sportage has become the UK’s favourite family SUV because it consistently provides what people want: quality and reliability they can trust, efficient and flexible powertrains, all housed in a thoughtful and stylish design. Its continued success shows the strength of our brand and the trust customers place in us.”
Five Generations of Success
The Sportage first went on sale globally in 1993 and reached the UK two years later. Five generations later it remains Kia’s best-selling model both in Britain and worldwide. The current fifth-generation car arrived in early 2022 and received a comprehensive facelift in 2025, bringing sharper front and rear styling, a refreshed interior and a simplified range of Pure, GT-Line and GT-Line S trims. Buyers can choose between efficient petrol and hybrid powertrains, with a plug-in hybrid version also available.
Award-Winning Appeal
The Sportage’s popularity is backed by a strong run of awards. It has been named What Car? Family SUV of the Year for four consecutive years. In 2026 it also collected the Best Hybrid Medium SUV title in the EcoCar Electrified Top 50 and the Best Car for Caravans up to 1,500kg at the What Car? Tow Car Awards.
For UK buyers looking for a practical, stylish and reliable family SUV that has proven its staying power, the Sportage continues to deliver. Its blend of everyday usability, efficient powertrains, a class leading 7-year or 100,000 miles warranty and strong residual values has clearly resonated with private and fleet customers alike.
