The new Renault 5 E-Tech has claimed the prestigious overall UK Car of the Year 2026 award, crowning an already impressive performance having already bagged the Small Car of the Year award.
The awards are based on votes from an independent panel of more than 30 leading UK automotive journalists. The award recognises the Renault 5 E-Tech as the most impressive new car currently on sale in Britain, praising it for combining nostalgic charm with engaging driving dynamics.
The award comes as the industry continues its shift towards electrification. Judges highlighted the Renault 5 E-Tech’s ability to combine eye-catching, retro-inspired design with real-world practicality, efficient performance and a chassis that delivers both agility and comfort.
The car has already proved popular with private buyers and fleet operators, thanks to its sensible pricing and generous levels of standard equipment.
Adam Wood, Managing Director of Renault UK, welcomed the news: “With so many experienced automotive journalists voting for R5 as the UK Car of the Year, the award is something we’re very proud of. It has really hit the spot with retail and fleet customers, and with 2026 being the first full year of sales, plus it being one of the very few EVs to qualify for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant, R5 is well on its way to being a very common sight on our roads.”
The Renault 5 E-Tech undercuts many of its rivals while offering up to 252 miles of WLTP-certified range. It also supports rapid charging from 15 to 80 per cent in approximately 30 minutes.
Inside, the OpenR Link infotainment system with Google built-in provides seamless connectivity and intuitive controls, users can also integrate their smartphone with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.
This latest accolade further cements the Renault 5 E-Tech’s status as one of the most important new electric cars available in the UK right now. By successfully reviving an iconic model for the electric age, Renault has created a car that feels both familiar and forward-thinking. It’s exactly the sort of vehicle that resonates with British drivers seeking style, fun and are looking to move into the EV car scene.
